Göbekli Tepe Does Not Need Atlantis
A Netflix series asked a fair question about a site six thousand years older than Stonehenge, then answered it with a lost continent. There is a better answer, and it leaves the achievement with the people who left the evidence.
In 2022 a British journalist got a Netflix series, and archaeologists spent the next two years being asked about it at parties.
The show was Ancient Apocalypse. Graham Hancock's argument was that an advanced civilisation existed during the last Ice Age, was destroyed by a cataclysm around twelve thousand years ago, and that its survivors fanned out across the world teaching primitive hunter-gatherers how to farm, how to build, how to read the sky. It was enormously popular. It was also, according to very nearly every professional archaeologist alive, nonsense.
I agree that it is nonsense. I also think the people dismissing it mostly failed to answer the question that made it persuasive.
Because Hancock was pointing at something real.
Göbekli Tepe sits in southeastern Turkey and dates to roughly 9600 BCE. Massive carved stone pillars, arranged in sophisticated circular enclosures, raised six thousand years before Stonehenge. Six thousand. The gap between Göbekli Tepe and Stonehenge is larger than the gap between Stonehenge and you.
The people who built it were, according to the standard account, simple hunter-gatherers. No permanent settlements. No agriculture. No social organisation complex enough to coordinate monumental construction, quarry multi-tonne limestone, carve it with animals in relief, and set it upright in a planned arrangement.
Göbekli Tepe should not be there. It is there.
And it is not alone. At least twelve related sites have been identified in the same region, collectively the Taş Tepeler, most of them barely touched. In September 2023 archaeologists at the sister site of Karahan Tepe pulled a 2.3-metre human statue out of the ground, the earliest realistic depiction of a person we have. In 2024 researchers argued that the carvings on Pillar 43 at Göbekli Tepe encode a lunisolar calendar: 365 days, twelve lunar months, eleven epagomenal days to make the arithmetic work.
The oldest complex calendar in human history, cut into stone by people who supposedly had not yet worked out farming.
So the question is fair. Where did that come from?
Hancock's answer is Atlantis. One advanced civilisation, now lost, which seeded the rest.
I want to suggest that this answer is not only unnecessary. It is, in a way its defenders never seem to notice, an insult.
Look at the shape of the argument. Peoples across four continents build astronomical alignments, develop agriculture, raise monuments, work out mathematics. Rather than conclude that these peoples were capable of it, the theory requires a vanished civilisation, conveniently undiscoverable, to have handed it to them. The achievement is removed from the people who left the evidence and given to a civilisation that left none.
This is a very old move. It is the same instinct that insisted Great Zimbabwe must have been built by Phoenicians, that the Benin bronzes were too fine to be African, that someone else must have shown the Maya how to do the sums. The lost-continent version simply spreads the condescension evenly across everybody.
There is a better answer, and it has been sitting in plain sight.
Knowledge arose everywhere because the capacity for it is built into us.
The Islamic tradition has a word for this: fitrah, the innate disposition toward truth that every human being is born carrying. The Qur'an states plainly that God sent a messenger to every people, that no community was left without guidance. Take that seriously for a moment, as a proposition about the world rather than a devotional formula, and see what it predicts.
It predicts exactly what we find.
If the capacity is universal, then distant and unconnected peoples developing astronomy, mathematics, agriculture and monumental architecture is not an anomaly demanding a special explanation. It is the base case. It is what the theory expects. You would need an explanation for the opposite finding, for a world in which only one people ever worked anything out.
Notice what this framework does that Hancock's cannot. It takes the evidence completely seriously. It does not require a conspiracy, a submerged continent, or a chronology that no stratigraphy supports. And it leaves the achievement with the people who actually achieved it. The hunter-gatherers of the Taş Tepeler built Göbekli Tepe. Not refugees from a drowned empire. Them.
The mainstream response to Hancock has generally been to deny that there is anything surprising here at all, which is both untrue and strategically hopeless. Göbekli Tepe is surprising. It genuinely does sit badly with the tidy sequence in which agriculture produces surplus, surplus produces hierarchy, and hierarchy produces monuments. It now looks as though the monument may have come first, and the farming followed to feed the people who gathered to build it.
Admit the surprise. Then give a better account of it than a lost continent.
What follows from this is not a small adjustment. If the light was given to everyone, then the history of human knowledge is not a single torch lit in one place and carried outward. It is many fires, lit independently, which later found each other, borrowed from each other, and occasionally went out.
Which changes the question you ask of any idea you hold.
Not: who invented this?
But: who carried it, and from whom?
