The Promise Is a Person
Renewal is guaranteed every century, which sounds like permission to wait. Read the wording: God does not renew the religion. He sends someone who does the work.
There is a hadith that promises Muslims something no other civilisation has ever claimed for itself.
Indeed, Allah will send for this Ummah at the head of every hundred years someone who will renew its religion for it.
Read it as consolation and it is pleasant and inert. Read it structurally and it is a claim about mechanism: that this civilisation has an immune system, that decline is never terminal, and that the correction is guaranteed rather than hoped for.
Which raises the obvious problem, and it is worth putting bluntly rather than edging around. If renewal is promised, why would anyone work?
The answer is in the wording, and it is easy to read past.
The hadith does not say God will renew the religion. It says He will send someone.
Not an event. Not an intervention. A person, operating inside history, with ordinary human capacities and an ordinary human lifespan. Not a prophet, because prophethood closed. A scholar, a reformer, a builder, someone with the knowledge and the nerve to diagnose the condition of their century and prescribe for it.
